Dear friends,

On March 11, the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic. This moment is unprecedented. There are constant sobering updates, and like you, we’re coping with a rapidly moving environment while we care for ourselves and our families. We can’t know exactly what’s to come in the future.

But here’s what we do know:

  • Abortion is essential healthcare. The governor’s recent declaration decrying abortion as non-essential healthcare will not stop pregnant Texans from seeking abortions. It will only force people to travel farther to get their abortions and experience travel barriers we’ve never before faced.
  • Our Program Coordinator keeps a record of routes and hotels that are safe for our clients. With shelter-in-place orders and hotels closing across the country, we’re navigating a landscape with fewer safe options for travel and lodging than ever before.
  • The same people losing their jobs and walking into empty grocery stores are calling closing clinics to figure out how get to the abortion they want and need.
  • People contacting Fund Texas Choice are more likely to not have paid sick time off.
  • They’re already parenting, and may have the new expense of finding childcare or taking time off work to be with their children as their schools close.

Abortion needs rise in the face of crisis, and unfortunately they do not pause as we figure out how to react as a society. We’re collaborating with other abortion funds and travel organizations because none of us can do this alone.

We do know your resources may be directed to your personal financial situation at this tenuous time. You may also be sending what you have to other mutual aid and community care organizations locally. We understand if your priorities and capacity may have shifted from just a few weeks ago, and we are still grateful to be in community with you, no matter what you have to offer at this moment.

We will continue to raise and distribute money to Texans seeking abortions, because this historic moment calls for our action. The people contacting Fund Texas Choice deserve to have more support and certainty, not less, at the other end of the line.

In Solidarity,
Fund Texas Choice Board of Directors & Staff

P.S. – If you’re not already, please follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter where we’ll continue to keep you updated on what our clients are facing. We’re all in this together.
